This book takes place in mexico during the 50’s.
The protagonist of the story is Miguel (age 15) and the antagonist is his sister Elena (age 13).
On Miguels 15th birthday he recieved a letter that asked for him to come to America. See that now 15 he was concidered mature enough to travel to America, but, Elena, whome was jelious of her brother for him getting to go to America before her snuck along with him. Later in the story Miguel caught his sister, who had been dressed up like an older woman. They can afford very little and must save their money to pay for transportation to their parents. One night they resort to sleeping near a dumpster and in the middle of the night they are mugged.
Luckily on the bus ride they met a man named Jvi, who helped escort them on their journey because they are young and he doesn’t want to see anything happen to them. eventually after stowing away on a train, walking through the desert and almost dying they finally made it to there destination.
I liked this book because it really shows the perils that mexicans go through to get into America so that they have better healthcare, education and an all around better life.
